Dee Van Balen

Dee Van Balen is an author, educator, and inventor residing in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She earned her degree from West Virginia University and pursued master’s coursework at Kansas State University. In addition to writing “The Closing Door,” Dee is the inventor of the SIGHT SHEET Vision System.
Inspired by her family’s roots in Amsterdam and her own travels throughout Holland, Dee created The Mystical Flight to capture the magic and wonder of Dutch folklore. The story was thoughtfully shaped alongside her two daughters, whose ongoing support and creative insights helped bring the project to fruition. Grounded in her faith and gratitude for those around her, Dee continues to write stories that celebrate hope, family, and the beauty of the world.

Dee’s love of storytelling never began with a desire to become a writer — it began with a habit of asking ‘what if.’ What if the strange blue light at the edge of a dream wasn’t only a dream? What if the moments we’re taught to overlook are actually invitations? Asked quietly and often enough, that question eventually became impossible to set aside — and The Mystical Flight was her answer to it.

The idea for The Mystical Flight arrived the way most of Dee’s ideas do — as a single image she couldn’t shake: a glowing butterfly against a midnight sky. What started as a fragment slowly grew into a full story, written in the quiet hours when the rest of the world felt far away. Less an act of invention than one of listening, the process was about staying with that image long enough for the story hiding inside it to finally reveal itself.
